Don was born in Otter Lake, Michigan on September 1, 1928, the son of the late Charles Leonard and Mabel Irene Gee. He graduated from Otter Lake High School in 1946 where he enjoyed playing football and basketball and earned the nickname "Baldy"; which led to many enjoyable stories recalled by him. He was joined in marriage to his high school sweetheart Norma Jean Griffin, on January 31, 1948 and the couple resided in the Otter Lake area for many years until retiring to Gladwin.

Don worked at P.T. Chevrolet in Millington, Wetherwax Bump & Paint, Otisville, and taught Auto Body Repair for sixteen years at Davison High School where he retired in 1986. Over the years he enjoyed golfing, playing cards, bowling, hunting, fishing and was a member of the Millington Lions Club, Michigan Association of Retired Teachers, Sugar Springs Activity Committee, and a founding member of the LakeVille Athletic Boosters. He and Norma enjoyed camping and traveling, which was highlighted by an Alaskan cruise in 1998.

Upon his death, Don was reunited with his wife of 68 years, Norma, who preceded him less than four months before on October 30, 2016. Left to cherish their memory are their children; Penny (Louis) Kovacs, Linda (Bill) Lewis, Barbara (Michael) Marshall, Mark (Lori) Gee, and Michael Gee; their loving grandchildren; Kim (Thad) Ledy, Craig (Rachel) Morton, Katie (Bryan) Heid, Adam Lewis, Michael Gee, Kyle Gee, and great-grandchildren; Jessica, Jasmine (Tymon), Jenna, Camden, Jade, Jorja, Marisa, Nash, Nolan, Lucas, and great-grandchildren; Lyla and Lenora.
